How clear standards can support safe, sustainable and market-ready algae-based food products across Europe.

As the NOVAFOODIES project approaches its conclusion in October 2026, one of its key legacies is the contribution to the development of innovative and sustainable food systems based on marine and freshwater resources. Among these promising solutions, algae are gaining increasing attention for their nutritional value, versatility and potential to support more sustainable food production.
The latest NOVAFOODIES Factsheet “Microalgae prototype – standardization framework“, prepared by ASRO, explores the importance of standardisation frameworks for algae-based products, with a particular focus on species from the genera Alaria and Gracilaria. These algae are increasingly used in food, feed, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications, making clear and harmonised standards essential for ensuring quality, safety and consumer confidence.
In the European Union, algae products are regulated through a comprehensive legal and technical framework that addresses food safety, contaminant control and sustainability. Standardisation plays a crucial role in supporting innovation, facilitating trade and helping businesses bring reliable algae-based products to market.
Several standards developed by CEN/TC 454 – Algae and algae products already provide guidance on key aspects such as species identification, product specifications and analytical methods. These include standards for biomass identification, nitrogen and protein content measurement, and the determination of valuable compounds such as beta-carotene and fucoxanthin.
The factsheet also highlights international experiences that may inspire future developments in Europe. Japan, for example, has established mature regulatory frameworks for edible seaweeds, including specific quality requirements for organic seaweed production and processing. Such examples demonstrate how clear standards can contribute to the growth of a competitive and trusted algae sector.
Through its research and innovation activities, NOVAFOODIES has supported efforts that align scientific advancements with standardisation processes, helping to pave the way for more efficient production methods and greater market acceptance of algae-derived foods.
