THE CULTIVATION OF EDIBLE BIOMASS AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF CORK HAS STARTED!
After the installation of a Bubble Column Photobioreactor and a 100 L flat-panel “type” photobioreactor, known as the Green Wall Panel™ (shown in the picture) at the School of BEES i.e. Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University College Cork.
These reactors will demonstrate the production of edible whole biomass and proteins from single celled microalgae and provide original baseline information on yields achievable under natural environmental conditions here in Ireland.
Initial inoculations had begun on July 22nd, using the EFSA approved microalgae Chlorella vulgaris with year-round batch cultivations, outdoors in summer and in glasshouses during winter, planned to identify optimized cropping and cultivation protocols to maximize yields under temperate northerly conditions.
Stay tuned to discover the cultivation progresses.
